About
Signal K is an open specification and a server for marine data. Instruments, GPS, AIS, and engine sensors publish into one model, and apps on the boat or ashore subscribe over a web API instead of parsing raw NMEA sentences themselves.
The reference server runs on Node.js and is the hub in stacks such as OpenPlotter. It is aimed at builders and owners who want a self-hosted data bus on the vessel — not a chartering or fleet-management suite. The protocol is the interchange layer; the server is what you actually install.
